The Sierra de la Contraviesa, a few kilometers south east of Granada, was already mentioned in the famous German “Weinbuch” (Book on Wine), published in 1865 by Doctor Wilhelm Hamm. After the phylloxera plague at the end of the 19th century rapidly growing and disease resisant vines were planted and they formed the basis of the “vino de la costa”, the “Costal wine”, a simple. frequently oxidised, country wine. Only a few years ago some enthusiastic wine makers have redicovered the region for quality wine.
